對成人為非必需氨基酸，但體內生成速度較慢，對嬰幼兒為必需氨基酸，有一定解毒作用。
天然品大量存在于魚精蛋白等中，亦為各種蛋白質的基本組成，故存在十分廣泛。

性狀:白色斜方晶系(二水物)晶體或白色結晶性粉末.熔點244℃(分解).經水重結晶后,于105 ℃失去結晶水.其水溶性呈強堿性,可從空氣中吸收二氧化碳.溶于水(15%,21℃),不溶于乙醚,微溶于乙醇.

L-精氨酸也是精子蛋白的主要成分,有促進精子的質量,提高精子運動能量的作用.
精氨酸可有效提高免疫力、促進免疫系統分泌自然殺傷細胞、吞噬細胞、白血球內烯素 (interleukin-1) 等內生性物質，有利于對抗癌細胞及預防病毒感染。另外，精氨酸是鳥氨酸 (L-ornithine) 及脯氨酸 (L-proline) 的前趨物，脯氨酸是構成膠原蛋白的重要元素，補充精氨酸對于嚴重外傷、燒傷等需要大量組織修護的康護，具有明顯的幫助，同時具有降低感染及發炎的效果。
